My work is an exploration of surfaces and textures, both natural and man-made. Landscapes and structures are both affected by time, weather, and human touch, creating a fascinating picture of transformation and reminding us that nothing stays the same forever. Weathered wood, peeling paint, and faded lettering are as much an inspiration as a wide-open horizon or a fantastic rock formation.
I start each piece by making a heavily-stitched canvas from fabric and batting to provide surface texture for the painting. Sometimes I add extra dimension by including cast-off trimmings from previous works. Then, with paint, I begin a process of creation and destruction, of an evolving image that may change several times before I consider it finished. Colors are built up in many layers, and a complex surface texture is the result. The images are abstract for the most part, but they are all based in some way on the idea of transformation effected by external forces.
